Getting
Started with ARTStor
Because
of the graphic nature of ARTStor, there are specific technical requirements
that may have to be set on your computer.
Below is a list of those requirements. For additional information
refer to the "Help" section of ARTStor.
| Sun
Java Version 1.3 or above is required. |
Cookies
must be enabled. |
| Flash
Player version 6 or above is required. |
1024
x 768 screen resolution is recommended. |
| Pop-up
blocking software must be disabled. |
Screen
colors should be set to True Color (32 bit). |
1. To
Access ARTStor, click on "Journal Articles/Databases" from
the homepage.
2.
If you are on campus, select "Fine Arts" from the subject
grid and then click on ARTStor.
3. If you are using ARTStor from home,
refer to the "Login Information"
guide.

4. At
the ARTStor screen, click on "Search and Browse for Images".

5.
Due to the nature of this database, the next screen may take a little
while to load. Once loaded, there is no need to register for
ARTStor unless an instructor has set up class folders or you
wish to create your own folders.
Browsing
Collections
6.
To browse a collection, click on collection either from the toolbar or select the Collections, Classification or Geography link underneath the "Browse Collections" area of the page.

7. Selecting the ARTStor Collections link takes you the the Image Gallery page. On this page you can select a collection. For example we will select The
Hartill Archive collection below. The plus signs in
front of each heading will expand and show the topics for that heading.
In this example "Prehistoric Art" has been expanded. Selecting the minus sign will collapse that category.

7.
Clicking on "United Kingdom" returns thumbnail images of the
collection. Fifteen images appear on a page. To move through the pages,
click on the next arrow near the number of pages returned. In this example
2 pages of images have been returned.
8.
To return to the collection page, click on the Back button in the toolbar
shown below. To select another topic within that collection, select
the "Browse Collection" button.

Searching ARTStor
9.
To perform a keyword search, type a search term into the "keyword
search" box (for a phrase use
quotes, "stained glass" for example). The advanced search screen
on the right allows you to search by keyword, classification, geography and date.
10. The
result screen shows that number of images returned and the number of pages containing those results. In the results below 288 images were returned over 19 pages.
11.
To enlarge the image, double-click on the image (see the orange box below). To view information
about the image, double-click on the title beneath the image (see the red box below).

The
information screen that pops up when the user double-clicks on the image
title appears below.

12.
Double-clicking on the image enlarges the image to half screen. It is
possible to enlarge the image to full screen size or, if desired, it
is possible to view two images side by side. When opening the second
image, the first image will close to the lower computer toolbar. Clicking
on the desired toolbar icon will enable both images to be viewed on
the screen. See below for results.

13.
The icons on the lower right side of each picture are as follows: print,
view image information (see image above step 11), list all the images
in this collection, enlarge the image to full screen, hide these control
buttons and download the image.
